Spread around due to the mosquito, Heartworm is a very real, very present threat in places where these insects could potentially flourish. The names comes from its tendency to linger around the heart, causing general havoc in canines as it releases a few thousand young every day that it is present there. Owners can rarely tell if they’re even there during the first six months, where the worms are gestating and growing. Occasionally, some heartworms unfortunately make it to worrying sites such as the eye and cause havoc there. Sadly, even past this six month grace period, your canine probably won’t exhibit any symptoms of the worm’s presence. Only active or energetic dogs will tend to show some signs of infection, as they will appear weaker and with a cough. The later part of the disease leads to heart failure, a fatal stage.

Luckily, Heartgard protects your canines before the infection even has a chance of settling in. It acts as a preventive drug, a vaccine of sorts that needs to be given to your dog once a month. There are sensitive dogs or canine breeds out there, but luckily, various agencies have approved it for use for dogs of any weight, as long as they are over six weeks of age. Infected dogs cannot be given Heartgard however, as it can cause undue effects. Most veterinarians will actually test your dog, running them through a series of blood tests and other such tests before they prescribe Heartgard to it. Care should be taken as a dog taking too much of the drug can lead to the said dog dying.
